"Bolving?
What's that then?" Well, it's mimicking the sound a red deer stag
makes (otherwise known as roaring or belling) during the deers' rutting season. For
more on this see About Bolving
and listen to the sound on the Videos
page.
"That's a strange thing to do!" Well, it
might sound like a strange pastime but it's
something that people in these parts have done for donkey's years. For
the last four seasons it's something that has been done to raise money
for charity. It's unique, it's popular and people come from
miles around to witness the spectacle!
Last year's event at Draydon Rails was a resounding
success, filmed by Johnny Kingdom for his TV documentary series ("A
Year On Exmoor Series 2"), which was aired Nationally, earlier
this year. There were umpteen contestants, over 200 people attended and we
raised over £1,790 for
Devon Air Ambulance
as Elvis Afanasenko carried off the Phil Ferris Memorial Trophy. This
year we're hoping to raise a lot more for the same cause.

Exmoor TV nature
documentary maker Johnny Kingdom has agreed to judge this year's
competition again. In his time Johnny has been a farm
worker, a quarry man, a lumberjack, a poacher and, for over 50
years, Johnny has been the grave digger for his local Parrish, as
was his father, who first took Johnny along with aged 12.
For more than 20 years
he has filmed the wildlife on Exmoor. He has produced 26 wildlife
videos of his own and a two hour audio tape and has appeared on
breakfast TV, documentaries and children’s TV, for the BBC, YTV HTV
and Channel 4. For the last seven years he has been making series
and documentaries for HTV about Exmoor and Somerset wildlife.
